At Tiong Bahru Food Centre, there are two well-known stalls that serve Lor Mee: Tiong Bahru Lor Mee and 178 Lor Mee. However, we decided to give 178 Lor Mee a try.

The celebrations usually last for about 15 days, ending with the Lantern Festival. It is an official public holiday in China and many other countries with significant Chinese populations, such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Chinese New Year is a time for families to come together and celebrate the end of the old year and the beginning of the new. Many people return to their hometowns to be with their families and participate in traditional customs and activities. These include paying respects to ancestors, giving red envelopes filled with money to children and unmarried adults, and eating special foods.

Chinese New Year 2023 is the year of the rabbit, according to the Chinese Zodiac. The exact date of the Chinese New Year 2023 would fall between January 22nd and February 10th, it depends on the Chinese lunar calendar.

How to reach Chinatown

Chinatown can be reached via the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system. The nearest MRT station to Chinatown is the Chinatown MRT Station on the North-East Line. This station is located within the Chinatown area and exits directly into the heart of the district.

Another option is to take the East-West Line to the Outram Park MRT Station and then transfer to the North-East Line towards Punggol and alight at Chinatown MRT Station.

It is located in the central part of the city-state and is home to a large population of Chinese Singaporeans. The area is known for its colorful shophouses, traditional temples, and bustling street markets.

Chinatown is also home to many traditional Chinese medicine shops, where visitors can find a wide range of herbs and remedies. Visitors can also find a variety of traditional Chinese goods, such as lanterns, silk products, and jade jewelry.

Visitors can also find a variety of modern products and souvenirs. It is a great place to experience the culture, history, and atmosphere of Singapore's Chinese community.

For CNY 2023, beautiful rabbit-shaped lanterns and street lights line has been displayed on New Bridge Road, Eu Tong Sen Street, South Bridge Road and, for the first time, Upper Cross Street. A multi-generational rabbit family comes together for the Chinese New Year in this towering 10m centrepiece located at the junction of Upper Cross Street and New Bridge Road.

From the house of Laksa to Satay, below is our top 5 must try food at Bedok interchange hawker center.

1. Handmade Fishball noodles

Handmade fishball noodles are one of the most popular and delicious street food which you will find in any hawker center in Singapore. The dish consists of noodles served with handmade fishballs in a flavorful broth along with some sambal.
They serve a bowl filled with handmade fishballs, meatballs and noodles. The fishball was very light and easy to bite whereas the meatballs was little firm and flavourful. The bowl also had yellow noodles (mee kia) , with minced prok, meat slices, spring onions, beansprouts and blended with their signature sauce.
The fishballs at Yong Hwa Delights were delightfully bouncy and the meatballs aren’t perfectly spherical, which meant that they were delicately made by hand. We liked that they were bite-sized, which made them easier to pop in the mouth. Each fishball was smooth with the right hint of saltiness, and chewing on these mini delights was a joyful experience in itself.

2. Chwee Kueh

Chwee Kueh (literally means water cake) is steamed rice flour cake dish which is usually topped with sweet preserved radish and served along with some chillies. This is type of snack or breakfast dish which is usually eaten in Singapore. You will find a long queue before you get a chance to grab your share. The super savoury and crunchy radish is perfect combination with the chwee Kueh. Add a bit of sambal to activate your taste buds :)
The Bedok Chwee Kueh is made from glutinous rice flour and is typically topped with preserved radish (chai poh) and served with a side of chili sauce. The rice cake has a soft and chewy texture and is often served as a snack or as part of a larger meal. The aromatic and nicely browned chai-poh topping plays an equally important part in the dish. Chwee Kueh is good when it is so soft that you can practically swallow it without chewing.

3. Fatt Soon Kueh

Soon Kueh is dumpling stuffed with julienned jicama, bamboo shoots, peanuts and dried shrimp, and is then wrapped in a skin made of rice and tapioca flour. The dough is formed into small balls, which are then steamed and served with a sweet syrup made from palm sugar or coconut milk. You can eat it with black sweet sauce and chilli sauce and is also a popular snack in Singapore and Malaysi.

It is known for its chewy texture and sweet flavour, and is a popular choice among locals and tourists alike. The kuehs are made in the shop continuously so it’s definitely fresh. Loved their kuehs, especially the chives.

4. Chicken Curry noodles

A huge line at any hour of the day for their pipping hot bowl of chicken noodles at Hock Hai (Hong Lim) Curry Chicken Noodles.Curry Chicken Noodles is one of those local hawker dishes that are fast diminishing in Singapore.
A few famous ones include Do Po at Golden Mile Food Centre, Heng Kee Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee and Ah Heng Chicken Curry Bee Hoon Mee both at Hong Lim Food Centre. Apart from that there are two more Hock Hai (Hong Lim) Curry Chicken Noodles at Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre and Fu Hai Curry Chicken Noodles at Albert Food Centre. Hock Hai (Hong Lim) Curry Chicken Noodle has been around way before Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre’s renovation in 2013. The stall has been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand in the Singapore Guide 2019.

5. Chendol

Xue Hua Fei is a full-on dessert stall, they don't sell standard hawker drinks. Since 1979, Uncle Teo has been selling his humble mouthwatering local desserts at cheap, ranging from chendol, ice jelly to cheng tng. Try their Da Xi Gua which literally translates to Big Watermelon.

The park consists of three waterfront gardens: Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden, and Bay Central Garden.

This conservatory replicates the cool and dry conditions of the Mediterranean and offers a unique opportunity for visitors to see a wide range of plants and flowers in a single location.

The Cloud Forest is a humid tropical forest that recreates the conditions of the highlands of Southeast Asia, with a 35-meter (115-foot) tall mountain covered in lush vegetation and a 40-meter (130-foot) tall waterfall. It is a conservatory that replicates the cool, moist conditions of a tropical cloud forest. Inside, visitors can explore the world's tallest indoor waterfall and discover the diverse plant life of the cloud forest ecosystem.

The Supertree Grove is an iconic spot for photography because of its collection of artwork. The OCBC skyway walkway is one of an experience, allowing visitors to enjoy the aerial view and surroundings around from 22m above the sea level. Garden Rhapsody is a signature light and sound show is one of the main attractions one should not miss when visiting the Gardens by the Bay. It usually happens twice in the evening for an hour 7.45pm and 8.45pm. The Supertrees (towering structures) are illuminated with a variety of colors and patterns, creating an amazing visual display. Rainfall is an everyday affair and is quite a normal thing.

The weather is relatively warm and humid throughout the year. Humidity is something that you will have to battle with in Singapore.

Carrying an umbrella can help protect you from the rain and keep you dry, which can be especially important if you're out exploring the city on foot.

An umbrella can also provide some protection from the sun, which can be intense in Singapore.

Nature is at its best and this is definitely a lifetime experience if you love to connect with nature. Situated in Cat Ba islands, Viet Hai is a must-visit place in Vietnam.

How can you get to Viet Hai ??

Only by boat !!

You have two options:

Ha long bay(UNESCO Heritage)

You can book a Ha Long Bay cruise and check with your operators for the Viet Hai village day tour. Ask them for a rented bicycle so that you can ride and see the village by yourself or you could check once you reach the village.

Cat Ba Island

You have options to get to Viet Hai.

#1 Either you trek to this village through the jungle of Cat Ba National Park (about 17km — this will be mostly 1-day trek). This is difficult and tiresome.

#2 You book Airbnb (yes, you have limited Airbnb options in Viet Hai) and can take a private boat from Beo tourist dock. (It will be an hour by boat then book a golf cart which will get you to the village).

Viet Hai Village

For those who haven’t heard about Viet Hai, this village is typically surrounded by tall mountains, dense jungles, and a vast ocean. Viet Hai keeps itself away from the hush-bush city world. With its untouched natural landscape and warm and welcoming locals, Viet Hai sets it apart from regular Vietnam tourist attractions/destinations. It typically has very few homestays and all seem to be very close-knit to each other. You can rent out a bicycle to explore the village and experience the essence of serene village life.

Viet Hai is truly a land of joy, happiness, complete relaxation and disconnect from the rest of the world. All you need is to immerse yourself in nature.

Best time to visit Viet Hai

You can visit during winter (December -February) or spring (March-April) is the best. But honestly, there is no right or wrong time to visit :)

Top 5 activities to do in Viet Hai Village

Day 1: Trekking

Reach your homestay in the morning. Have your lunch and rest for a while. You could start your trip with a small half-day trek at Cat Ba National Park in the nearby jungle or you could exclusively do a one day trek. On the top it overlooks the Ha long Bay.

Firefly Hunt Tour

This is typically a two-hour night trip wherein you hop into kayaks at the nearby floating village to immerse yourself in thousands of lighting creatures. Worth the experience!

Cycling

Enjoy the real beauty of the village by riding a bicycle through the narrow road to enjoy the fresh air and admire the green nature. You could also take a walk or a tram.

One-day Cruise and Kayaking

One-day cruise along Lan Ha Bay. This isolated heaven is an extension of Ha Long Bay and is equally beautiful and less visited. Lunch is served on the cruise with a good seafood spread which includes prawns, lobsters, clams with rice. The cruise stops at a nearby beach where you can either swim/kayak depending upon your choice or you can be on the cruise as well.

Bat Cave (Tien Duc Cave)

You could also go for a Bat Cave tour which is 10 mins walk from the village. Trekkers will encounter plenty of bats sticking or swinging onto the caves. You will need a torch, water and good pair of shoes.

Vietnam is known for its exceptional cuisine, beautiful landscape and mixed culture which is worth the mention and visiting. You have a lot of places which you can visit depending upon your interest ( right from adventures/wellness, food, beaches, city exploration etc).

Other notable attractions include the Temple of Literature, the One Pillar Pagoda, the Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter, a historic district of the city characterized by its narrow, tree-lined streets and colonial-era architecture.

Hanoi is a city that offers a unique blend of history, culture and modernity, and is well worth a visit for anyone interested in learning more about Vietnam and its rich cultural heritage.

Every dish was unique in its own way and you will fall in love with the cuisine. These street foods are widely available in the city's bustling street food markets, as well as from street vendors and small, family-run restaurants. Whether you're looking for a quick snack or a full meal, Hanoi's street food scene has something to offer for everyone.

Banh Mi ( Sandwiches)- Sandwich which originates from French-colonial Vietnam and combines traditional Vietnamese ingredients with the classic French baguette. A crusty baguette which is has a soft and airy texture is filled with a variety of ingredients, such as marinated meat, pickled vegetables, fresh herbs, and chili peppers. You get variety and savoury meat including grilled pork, chicken, beef, and tofu, and the ingredients are typically seasoned with sauces such as hoisin and sriracha.

Today, Banh Mi is enjoyed around the world as a delicious and convenient food option.

Bún Chả- It is a traditional Vietnamese pork dish that’s a speciality of Hanoi (a must try !!) . Grilled fatty pork served over a plate of white rice noodles some herbs , pickled vegetables mostly green papaya or carrots, with a side dish of dipping sauce (typically fish sauce+sugar+chillies, lime juices , vinegar, stock). The grilled pork patties and slices of pork belly are marinated in a mixture of spices, giving them a rich, savory taste. The noodles, herbs, and dipping sauce provide a fresh and tangy contrast to the meat. This is served with fresh crisp spring rolls (Prawns , crab or meat). It is a beloved dish in Vietnamese cuisine, known for its delicious and well-balanced flavours.

Bún Chả is typically served in small restaurants or street stalls and is a popular meal for both locals and tourists. The dish is quite often enjoyed with a side of crispy spring rolls or other small dishes. It is definitely a must-try dish for anyone who loves Vietnamese food and is looking for a delicious and satisfying meal.

Banh Xeo (Vietnamese Crepes) - A crispy stuffed rice pancake popular in Vietnam. It is a savoury fried pancake or crepe made of rice flour, water, and turmeric powder and filled with various ingredients, such as shrimp, pork, bean sprouts, and mushrooms. It is topped with a heap of bean sprouts, folded in half, and served with salad leaves and fresh herbs and is meant to be wrapped up and eaten by hand. All you need is to dip it in nuoc cham, a Vietnamese dipping sauce made from fish sauce, lime juice, and chilli peppers.. This dish is served either as a main course or as a snack.

Balut Egg- This is a street food delicacy in Vietnam. Balut is a fertilised developing egg embryo that is boiled and eaten from the shell (Yes, it will have some bones , eyes, brains which are forming). The embryo is often cooked until it is fully formed, and is eaten along with the yolk and white of the egg.

The taste of balut egg is often described as a combination of chicken soup and egg, with a slightly gamey flavor from the partially formed duck embryo. Balut eggs are also a rich source of protein and other nutrients, and are believed to have various health benefits.

Balut is often seasoned with salt and vinegar and is considered a delicacy in many cultures, prized for its rich flavor and nutritional value. The dish is often considered an acquired taste, as the texture and appearance can be off-putting to some people. Nevertheless, Balut remains a staple of street food culture in Southeast Asia and continues to be enjoyed by those who appreciate its unique flavor and texture.

Deep fried Prawns , Pho rolls- Pho rolls is a variation of the popular Vietnamese dish, Pho. They are very similar to spring rolls and are made by wrapping rice noodles, meats, and vegetables in rice paper. The rolls are then fried until crispy, creating a crunchy exterior that contrasts with the soft and savory filling. Pho rolls are a popular snack in Vietnam and are often served as an appetizer or as a main dish. They are also a convenient and portable food option, making them a popular street food item. Again, these rolls can be served with dipping sauces, such as soy sauce or chili sauce, to add extra flavor and complexity to the dish.

Banh Tieu- a Vietnamese snack food which is similar to a doughnut, made from rice flour and served with sweet or savory toppings. The dough is deep-fried until crispy and golden brown, resulting in a light and airy texture. Banh Tieu can be filled with a variety of ingredients, such as mung beans, meat, or cheese, and are often topped with sesame seeds or crushed peanuts. A popular street food in Vietnam, often sold from street vendors and enjoyed as a snack or dessert. The dish can be sweet or savory, and its versatile flavor makes it a popular food item for people of all ages.

Banh Tieu can often served with dipping sauces, such as sweetened condensed milk, or sprinkled with powdered sugar for a touch of sweetness.

Crab spring roll - A typical Vietnemese snack which one must try when in Hanoi. This is crab fried spring roll. Obviously as the name suggests, it has crab meat, pork, carrots, mushrooms, bean sprouts, mushrooms and other veggies and spice powders. Fill the mixture into the thin rice paper, roll it and deep fry until golden and crispy. This dish is combined with a dipping sauce usually made out of fish sauce, vinegar, chillies, salt and sugar. It also had chucks of papaya as well for the flavour.

Desserts- Vietnam has a rich culinary culture, and its street food scene offers a variety of sweet and delicious desserts.Some popular and authentic dessert options in Hanoi include

Che: a sweet pudding made from beans, fruits, and sticky rice
Banh Mi Hue: a sweet cake made from rice flour and served with a sweet syrup
Che Bap: a sweet corn pudding served with coconut milk
Chè Chuối: a dessert made from bananas and sweetened condensed milk
Bánh Flan: a caramel custard dessert (A must try !!)
Xôi Xéo: a sweet sticky rice dish made with coconut milk and various toppings, such as peanuts or mung beans.

You can also try their sticky black rice, Durian coconut ice-cream (served in tender coconut fruit itself), Chocolate Oreo coconut ice-cream as well.

During our own Hanoi Old Quarter exploration, there were few dishes which we recommend for new visitors and who would like to tingle their tastebuds

Pho A Vietnamese soup dish consisting of broth, rice noodles, herbs, and meat (Chicken, Pork , Beef). It is a popular food in Vietnam where it is served in every households, street stalls and restaurants countrywide. Pho is considered Vietnam’s national dish. People have this during lunch or dinner which keep one’s tummy full for good 4–5 hours.

Banh Cuon It is really light of your tummy. Banh Cuon made from a thin, wide sheet of fermented rice batter filled with a mixture of cooked seasoned ground pork, minced wood ear mushroom, and minced shallots. It is served with chillies , bean sprouts, Vietnamese herbs , fry shallots and Nuoc mam cham (mixed fish sauce).

Caramel Custard @ Kem Caramen I really don’t remember the exact count on how much did i hog. This was one of a kind !! The custard was wobbly, smooth and silky and it had a perfect vanilla and egg flavour. The caramel was balanced in terms of taste — neither too sweet nor bitter. These custards are usually served cold and i just truly loved it.

During our food exploration in Hanoi Old quarter, it is observed that you have these small stools and tables which you need to grab. Once you’re seated, someone will come over to take your order. Also, you usually do not have English menus. Hence, whatever you need or want to know, use a Google translator to help yourself and make it easy for stall/restaurant folks to get what you want.

J i Ji Noodle doesn’t need an introduction when you are in Hong Lim Food Center in Chinatown. And why not ? Michelin star from 2016 until now (2022) serves one of the best wanton noodles sin Singapore.

By the way, you will definitely find long queues during lunch hours and it may take approx 1 hour +/- waiting time. One thing unique about this stall is their cashier machine which I think may help them to handle money much efficiently and is automated.

They have wide range of offerings right from their signature dish to dumpling noodles, Chicken cutlet noodle, braised soy sauce chicken noodle, mom’s curry chicken noodles etc is offered in different sizes ranging from S$4.5 till S$8.50.

Their classic signature dish “Char Siew Wanton noodle” is worth a try. It includes egg noodles (which is customised for Ji Ji Noodles), boiled dumplings, good portion of Char Siew (pork pieces), Chow Sum (Cai Xin), fried wanton, mushrooms, pork lard. You can order them either dry or soup.

The noodles is accompanied with a typical chilly paste (which has fried small fish), green chillies is served separately and has an unique flavour in itself.

The Char Siew is well marinated and tender in texture. Each slice is very well caramelised on the edges and moist in the centre of the pork. The crispy fried wanton is crunchy and fried (stuffed with pork) is also one of the standout ingredient in the dish.

They are open from morning 8am-7pm and closed usually on Thursdays

Price : Offers different sizes ranging from S$4.5 till S$8.50.
